I’ve been practicing law for 20 years in Edmonton, including over 5 years as a managing partner in a mid-size Alberta firm. My favorite part of practice is helping real people to understand legal issues and to help them navigate their way through real estate and business transactions. As a sailor and a leader, I recognize that to make progress, everyone needs to know the destination and play a part in navigating the way there. The longest, most difficult route is often not the best one; nor is the familiar route the only option. I often prefer the shortest route between where we are today and where we need to be, and clients appreciate that approach.

“Fit” to me means designing the firm to fit the ever-changing needs of clients – more technology, more convenience, more simplicity.

I came to the practice of law as a second career after decades of operations and customer service management.  I always wanted to be a lawyer “when I grew up” and having kids of my own reminded me of that goal.  For me, being a lawyer is in part about using both logic and creativity to solve problems but more than that, being a lawyer for me is about serving clients.  I always feel like I have done my job when clients tell me that they understood the transaction, in some cases “for the first time.”

“Fit” to me means communication.  Listening to clients, understanding their needs, and figuring out where we fit in with their life and their plans and then making that happen.

As a former U of A varsity sprinter, I know that commitment to the small things makes achieving the bigger goals possible. Now as a lawyer I see this principle translated while I work alongside clients, to breakdown their larger goals into manageable pieces. This is always a collaborative effort which resonates with my “team” mindset. Throughout the collaborative relationship with clients, when I can offer advice, a road map, or at times just a listening ear, is when I am most reminded of why I love what I do.

“Fit” to me means contributing my unique skills to bring clients’ goals to life. Each of us has a role to play, as we work to achieve those goals—something that is only attainable together.
